An aluminium pergola gives shade and a defined outdoor space without the full enclosure of a glass room. In Dubai the main choice is between a fixed-roof pergola and an adjustable louvred pergola, which may be operated by hand or by motor. The right one depends on how you use the space, how much sun and wind it gets, and how much maintenance you are happy with. This guide compares the options.
See our aluminium pergolas page for the designs we supply and install.
Fixed pergolas
A fixed pergola has a set roof: solid aluminium panels, slatted beams, or a roof with glass or polycarbonate sections. Once installed, the shade it gives does not change.
- Simple structure with no moving parts
- Low maintenance
- Good for permanent shade over seating, dining or parking
- A solid roof also keeps off rain
Louvred and motorised pergolas
An adjustable pergola has aluminium louvres (blades) in the roof that rotate. Open them for light and air, close them for shade or rain. They can be turned by hand or, on motorised systems, by a switch, remote or smart-home control.
- Control over sun, shade and airflow during the day
- Closed louvres can shed rainwater into the frame gutters
- Often combined with lighting, heaters or side screens
- More parts to maintain than a fixed roof
If you are considering a motorised system, ask your supplier which systems they offer, how the motor and controls are protected from heat and dust, and what servicing is recommended.
Fixed vs adjustable: side by side
| Point | Fixed pergola | Louvred / motorised pergola |
|---|---|---|
| Shade | Constant | Adjustable through the day |
| Ventilation | Depends on roof design | Open louvres let hot air escape |
| Rain | Solid roofs keep rain off | Closed louvres drain into gutters |
| Maintenance | Low | Louvres, seals and motor need care |
| Best for | Permanent shade, budget-conscious projects | Spaces used at different times of day |
Wind, sand and heat in the UAE
- Wind. Pergolas must be designed and fixed for the wind on your site. Rooftops and open coastal plots need more attention than sheltered gardens.
- Sand. Dust settles on louvres and in gutters. Check that blades and gutters are easy to reach and clean.
- Heat. Light finishes stay cooler to the touch. Good ventilation under the roof keeps the space more comfortable.
Drainage
Even in a dry climate, pergolas need a route for rain and cleaning water. Fixed solid roofs need a fall to a gutter. Louvred roofs collect water in gutters inside the frame and drain it down the posts, so check where that water will go on your paving or lawn.
Lighting, screens and extras
Pergolas can include LED lighting, ceiling fans, outdoor heaters and side screens or blinds for privacy and low sun. Plan power and cabling at the design stage.
Pergola or glass room?
A pergola is open-sided and works best as a shaded outdoor space. If you want to use the space with air conditioning, or keep it dust-free all year, a glass room is the better option. Some homeowners start with a pergola and add glazed sides or folding doors later. Our guide to glass room prices explains what changes when you enclose a space.
Approvals
Many villa communities require approval for pergolas, especially if they are visible from the street or attached to the house. Our approvals guide explains the usual steps.
What affects the price
- Size and number of posts
- Fixed or adjustable roof, and manual or motorised operation
- Finish and colour
- Lighting, screens, fans and heaters
- Foundations, fixings and site access
We confirm these on your quotation after a site visit.
Frequently asked questions
Do aluminium pergolas rust?
Aluminium does not rust like steel. A good powder-coated finish protects it further in the UAE climate.
Can a pergola keep out rain?
A solid fixed roof keeps rain off. Closed louvres shed most rain into the gutters.
Is a motorised pergola worth it?
It suits spaces you use at different times of day, when you want to change the shade easily. For constant shade, a fixed pergola is simpler.
Do I need approval for a pergola?
Often, yes. Check with your community before installation.
